Sports Prehab | Hip Flexor Series

The Hip Flexors are one of the most used muscles in all of sports, including soccer.

The hip flexors are a group of muscles that are located in the anterior (front) part of the hip joint. The primary hip flexor muscles include the iliopsoas, rectus femoris, sartorius, and tensor fasciae latae.

The iliopsoas muscle is the primary hip flexor and is composed of two muscles: the iliacus and the psoas major. The iliacus muscle originates from the iliac fossa of the pelvis and inserts into the lesser trochanter of the femur, while the psoas major muscle originates from the lumbar spine and inserts into the same site. The rectus femoris muscle originates from the anterior inferior iliac spine of the pelvis and inserts into the patella via the quadriceps tendon. The sartorius muscle originates from the anterior superior iliac spine of the pelvis and inserts into the medial surface of the tibia, while the tensor fasciae latae muscle originates from the anterior iliac crest and inserts into the iliotibial band of the fascia lata.

When the hip flexors contract, they bring the thigh bone (femur) towards the torso, flexing the hip joint. In addition to hip flexion, the hip flexors also help to rotate the femur inward (medial rotation) by pulling the thigh bone towards the midline of the body. This action is particularly important during activities such as walking, running, and cycling, where the hip flexors work in coordination with other muscles to produce smooth, efficient movements.
