Travel Is Load: How Soccer Players Can Manage Away Weekends Without Giving Away Performance

Travel is simply part of competitive soccer. For academy players, tournament teams, ECNL and MLS NEXT athletes, college players, and anyone competing across multiple cities, a normal weekend can include several hours in a car or airport, a hotel stay, schedule changes, unfamiliar meals, multiple matches, and then a return home directly into the next training week.

Most of the attention naturally goes toward the matches. We track minutes played, training load, sprint exposure, recovery between games, and sometimes even wellness or GPS data. What gets overlooked is everything happening around the match. The travel itself becomes another stressor that the athlete has to absorb.


That does not mean travel automatically ruins performance. It means travel needs to be accounted for when we look at the athlete’s total load. Research on athlete travel recognizes travel fatigue as a legitimate performance consideration, particularly when changes in routine, sleep disruption, prolonged inactivity, and competition demands begin to accumulate. Jet lag is a separate issue associated with crossing time zones, but an athlete can still experience travel fatigue without ever changing time zones (Janse van Rensburg et al., 2021).


That is really the purpose behind our Travel Playbook. We cannot always change kickoff times, hotel locations, tournament formats, school schedules, or the number of hours an athlete has to spend traveling. What we can do is make better decisions around those demands so the athlete is not creating additional fatigue before competition even begins.

Travel Adds to the Total Load

One of the biggest mistakes we can make is looking at travel as neutral time. Sitting in a car for four hours is not the same thing as four hours of high-quality recovery. The athlete may not be training, but the body is still dealing with prolonged sitting, altered meal timing, changes in hydration habits, and disruption to the normal daily routine.

Sleep is usually one of the first things to change. Early departures, late arrivals, unfamiliar beds, hotel noise, and competition schedules can all affect sleep quality and duration. Sleep is important not only for physical recovery, but also for reaction time, decision-making, coordination, mood, and the ability to tolerate additional training or competition stress.

Hydration can also become inconsistent during travel. Players may drink less because they do not want to stop frequently, access to fluids may be limited, or the normal routine of carrying and refilling a bottle disappears. None of these issues are dramatic by themselves, but when sleep disruption, reduced hydration, prolonged sitting, and competition are stacked together for several days, the effect becomes much more meaningful.

That cumulative nature is important. Travel fatigue does not always show up immediately. A player may feel fine getting out of the car on Friday night and still feel noticeably different during Saturday morning’s warm-up. The legs may feel heavy, coordination may take longer to come around, or the athlete may simply feel mentally flat. That should not automatically be viewed as poor fitness or lack of effort. The full context of the weekend matters.

The Travel Weekend Starts Before You Leave

One of the most important pieces of the Travel Playbook is the 72-hour period before departure. This is where I think a lot of athletes unintentionally create problems for themselves. There is a tendency to squeeze in one more hard conditioning session, one more heavy lower-body lift, or one more demanding training day because the athlete is about to leave town.

At that point, there is very little additional fitness to gain before the match. There is, however, plenty of opportunity to create soreness and residual fatigue.

The goal during the final few days before travel should shift toward arriving prepared rather than trying to add another training stimulus. High-intensity work does not necessarily need to disappear, but the volume should make sense for where the athlete is in the match week. Training should remain purposeful, and unnecessary conditioning, excessive volume, or unfamiliar exercises should be removed when they are more likely to create fatigue than improve readiness.

Sleep should also become more consistent in this period. We cannot always control what happens once a team arrives at a hotel, especially with early kickoff times or late matches, but we can avoid entering the weekend already carrying a sleep deficit. The same applies to hydration. Trying to correct poor hydration habits on the morning of departure is not the same as maintaining good hydration throughout the week.

For me, this is a simple change in mindset. The final 72 hours are not a last opportunity to get fitter. They are an opportunity to protect the work that has already been done.

Travel Day Is Controlled Recovery

The travel day itself should not be treated like a completely passive rest day. Long periods of sitting can reduce lower-limb blood flow and leave the hips, calves, and lower back feeling stiff. Research in healthy adults has shown measurable changes in lower-limb vascular function during prolonged sitting, while brief walking can help restore some of that function (Restaino et al., 2015).

That does not mean athletes need to turn every rest stop into a mobility session. The answer is much simpler. When practical, stand up, walk briefly, move the ankles and calves, and avoid staying in exactly the same seated position for several hours at a time.

Hydration should also remain steady. Drinking small amounts consistently throughout the trip generally makes more sense than arriving at the hotel dehydrated and trying to catch up all at once. Comfortable clothing, familiar snacks, and a relatively calm travel environment can also make the day easier to manage.

The Travel Playbook describes travel day as controlled recovery, and I think that is a useful way to frame it. The athlete is not trying to train. They are simply trying to arrive with as little unnecessary stiffness and fatigue as possible.

Reset After Arrival

What happens immediately after arrival can have a bigger effect than most athletes realize. The common routine is to check into the hotel, lie down, and start scrolling through a phone. After several hours of sitting, that usually means replacing one prolonged seated position with another.

A better option is a short reset. Ten to fifteen minutes of easy walking, light mobility, and normal movement is usually enough. The goal is not to create a workout. It is simply to restore circulation and reintroduce normal joint motion after being seated for several hours.

From there, hydration should continue, followed by a familiar meal and a predictable evening routine. Heavy meals late at night are rarely helpful, particularly when sleep time is already limited. The same applies to excessive screen exposure and stimulation immediately before bed.

There is no need to overcomplicate this process. The Travel Playbook emphasizes movement, hydration, familiar nutrition, and a calm sleep environment because these are practical things athletes and parents can actually control.

Keep Competition Day Familiar

Travel weekends are not the time to experiment with new foods, supplements, recovery methods, or completely different warm-ups. The environment is already unfamiliar. Keeping the athlete’s routine relatively predictable helps reduce one more source of stress.

Hydration should begin early in the day rather than immediately before warm-up. Meals should be familiar and easy to tolerate. If the athlete wakes up stiff, some light movement in the morning can help reintroduce normal range of motion without creating fatigue.

Warm-ups may also need a little more patience. After a long travel day or poor night of sleep, an athlete may not feel explosive in the first few minutes. That does not mean the answer is to immediately increase intensity. A slightly longer progression through the early phases of the warm-up can give the athlete time to feel normal before introducing faster accelerations, jumps, and higher-speed movements.

The goal is not to recreate a perfect routine from home. It is to create enough consistency that the athlete feels prepared in an unfamiliar environment.

Between Matches, Recovery Should Stay Simple

Tournament schedules create another challenge because athletes may have several hours between games. What happens during that time matters.

One of the easiest ways to feel worse going into the second match is to finish the first game and immediately sit for the next three hours. Light walking and occasional movement can help keep the body from becoming excessively stiff. Players should also get out of wet clothing, replace fluids, eat something appropriate, and avoid spending the entire break overstimulated by phones, noise, and constant activity.

Recovery between games is not about stretching aggressively or adding more work. It is about maintaining enough movement and recovery behavior that the athlete can transition back into the next warm-up without feeling like they are starting from zero again.

The same concept applies mentally. Tournament environments can be loud and chaotic. Short periods away from unnecessary stimulation can help the athlete settle down and conserve some mental energy for the next game.

Recovery Starts When the Match Ends

Recovery should not begin the following morning. It starts when the match ends.

The first priorities are fairly basic. Keep moving lightly before sitting for a long period, begin replacing fluids, eat when appropriate, get into dry clothing, and start moving toward a normal sleep routine as quickly as the schedule allows.

If another match is scheduled the next day, these decisions become even more important. The objective is not to eliminate soreness or fatigue overnight. That is unrealistic. The goal is to create the best possible environment for the athlete to recover from the work that has already been performed.

Sleep remains one of the biggest pieces of that process. The athlete may not always get the ideal amount of sleep during a tournament weekend, particularly after a late match. In those situations, controlling the environment becomes even more important. Getting off the phone, keeping the room dark and cool, and returning to a predictable routine can help protect the sleep opportunity that is available.

Post-match recovery is not about doing more. It is about getting the basics right consistently.

The Weekend Does Not End When You Get Home

This is probably the most overlooked part of the travel process.

The tournament finishes on Sunday, the athlete gets home, and Monday is immediately treated like a normal training day. The problem is that travel fatigue can be delayed. During a tournament, adrenaline, competition, teammates, and the environment can mask how tired an athlete actually is. Once they return home and that stimulation disappears, the accumulated fatigue may become much more noticeable.


That does not mean every athlete should automatically take two days off after traveling. It means the next training exposure should be based on the athlete who shows up, not simply the calendar.

Look at soreness, sleep quality, energy, mood, movement quality, and how the athlete progresses through the warm-up. A player who traveled two hours, played limited minutes, slept well, and feels good may be ready for a normal training session. Another athlete may have played three matches, traveled six hours, slept poorly, and returned home noticeably stiff and fatigued. Those two athletes should not automatically receive the same loading.


The Playbook uses the first 48 hours after demanding travel as a practical re-entry window, with lighter technical work, walking, mobility, breathing, and restoration of normal routines before returning to maximal sprinting and heavier loading.  I prefer to think of that as a decision-making period rather than a hard rule. The purpose is to see how the athlete is recovering and adjust the next exposure accordingly.

That is ultimately what good performance management should look like.

Travel Management Is Part of Development

None of these strategies are complicated, and they are not meant to be. We are not trying to turn every travel weekend into a sports science project. We are trying to help athletes and parents understand that performance is influenced by more than what happens during the 90 minutes on the field.

Preparation before travel matters. Sleep matters. Hydration matters. Prolonged sitting matters. The few hours after arrival matter. What an athlete does between games matters. Recovery after the final whistle matters, and the way the athlete re-enters training after coming home matters.


Long-term athletic development is rarely about finding one dramatic intervention. More often, it comes from consistently making better decisions around training, competition, and recovery. Travel management is simply another part of that process.
